Ninety Day Commitment

Hello all!

I've decided to take a page from the book of other programs I've read about. The aim: To create a new, desired habit. The means: Committing to doing something that works towards the end goal or new habit each day for a pre-determined span of time. The clincher is to have a means of being held accountable for achieving this daily goal.

In my case, I'd like to develop discipline, doing something artistic everyday, regardless of reservations and other obligations. To this end, I'm making the commitment to make 90 new drawings (or paintings, or test patches for materials, or whatever) in 90 days, and posting them here, for good or ill. I've taken off several months from creating any new artwork. I'm rusty and out of practice! It's perfect: I want to come back to it with a beginner's mindset, relearn the basics, develop new skills, and hopefully create a new and permanent habit of working everyday.

I'm not sure if it'll be structured, serious study, or goofing around with different media, or what.. but I'm really looking forward to finding out! Goodness knows I have enough instructional manuals and the like!

New Shirt, Yay!

Hi! Just in keeping with what I've been up too... a couple of weeks ago, I decided, though I love them all, I had way too many t-shirts. (over 40!) One of my favorites that had passed it's prime, was an old fan T of Tank Girl that I'm made while in collage with an iron-on transfer. I didn't really want to trash it, but it had gotten too dingy to keep. So I decided to make a replacement.
I ordered a blank T shirt from Hanes.com. Then, I scanned in a new image from one of the TG books I have, cut out the back ground, filled in the missing pieces of the image that'd been covered with word balloons using Photoshop. It was printed onto an old transfer sheet I had around. Man! It took forever to peel that thing off of it's backing.

But it's survived its first wash. Here are the results:

While these drawings are stylistically far removed from my usual, it has been a breath of fresh air creating the works. Ok, once again,I have painted a matzah, I do not think i will be able to eat matzah again, because of the nightmares, but anyway...

So this version I did with acrylics and oils. I used Lascoux acrylic paint to do the underpainting and various brands of oil paint on top. This is becoming a technique I am using more and and more because it allows the underpainting to dry really fast. If any of you are Acrylic painters, I suggest trying out lascoux(pronounced lascou)
paints, they are like the old holland of acrylics. This was also done on a wood panel which I first coated with Gamblin PVA size, which serves as an excellent alternative to usign matte medium to protect a surface because it doesnt leave a texture and is very thin in viscocity.

yep, that's right matzah. This is an illustration I am doing for a jewish magazine. In the jewish faith matzah holds a lot of meaning and is widely used to express many themes, unfortunately I did not come up with the concept, I gave them some ideas but they didn't take any, but this looks kind of interesting, I just wish I could have done something I came up with, oh well here is the 1st stage.

Something is not right in this one. Tried doing about 3/4 from reference and the rest from memory(values and such). I presume (well, I'm sure) the little foible in this one has to do with the way the cheek(right) ends and terminates as a slight fold around the lip, but screw it. I'll move on to the next drawing.

The deadline for the Visual Aids 4x6 "Postcards from the Edge" show is this Wednesday, December 10th. This is a rough sketch of the piece I would like to make for the show. I hope to try out some red/orange watercolor gradient for the background, then render the figure in cool blues in an opaque medium with black line work. I've not worked with watercolors more than once in close on to 10 years, and with acrylic paint in about 5. This ought to be very fun (I'm hoping).

Remembering Aviva Stone

Aviva Stone (1948-2007) was a popular figure model in NYC and she is being remembered by Spring Studio with a group exhibition of paintings and drawings of her by the artists she has worked with. My drawing above, done just a few months before her passing, will be included in the show. There will also be a memorial for Aviva on the 28th.

Happy Day-After-Thanksgiving, all!
I've spent countless hours scanning and cleaning all the images from a journal I keep, and write in comic book form. I finished this page tonight from the year 2000. I used to work in an "Arts and Crafts" Store back then, and here is the tribute I'd made to this season. I thought it may have relevance, given that today opens the holiday shopping season. I'm converting the dirty, sometimes washed out images to black and white bitmaps for archiving. A certain amount of the detail is filling in as black... does anyone have suggestions on how to avoid that?

This should be better. I lowered the brightness so the glare wouldn't come through and obscured some of the information as a consequence. A bit on the painting for any interested: the gun clenched in right hand(your left) of this sureal-like, neo-primal, mystic warrior type of character (whew) I'm debating, will be either a mix of gold, rusted copper or brass and onyx, or earth tone based (maybe jade..dunno). Not sure yet. Many options. The curved, blade looking thing jutting out of the left gun is sort of a bayonet, with two alterations: instead if it being on a rifle, it's on a cryptic, AI programmed 40 caliber Glock, and instead of the bayonets being daggers, they will be miniature double kitana's ( one on each side of the glocks nose) . I chose kitanas because of the genius behind its build. The slight curve on the blade makes for a swift kill at close range with slight expenditure of energy (because of how light it is)and precision. WAAAAAAAAAAH!

I am posting here my most recent pieces. I created these Sunday night / Tuesday morning. It's been a long time since I've worked through execution so quickly, and, thus, marks momentous occasion for me in and of itself.

I've been elected to create a monthly newsletter for my day-job. I've incorporated a "how to" section into this newsletter. In an attempt to satisfy my own desire for drawing practice and to gather material for and "art" resume, I've decided to create some how-to illustrations for the loading of a lamination machine for the upcoming "How-To" section of the newsletter.

These are the first two completed illos drawn at home and their loose reference sketches, along with the original, tighter reference drawing of the entire machine I'd done on-site during a Sunday over-night shift.

This is another example. I tried to create a sort o hybrid illustration comprising semi/tight-figurative, abstract, biomorphic and loose -sort of misplaced, yet balanced- elements complementing the overall compositional scheme in this portrait of "Aldous Huxley".

It's not a great camera shot, but I'm too lazy to upload a better version of it, so my apologies: I'll be sure to be more ambitious next time around.

This piece is purely experimental. Was heading home one day and was bombarded by a surge of God knows what, and so I went into a hardware store and picked up everything spontaneously required at the moment. I went home and got to work. And hour and a half later or so (with some touching up the following morning) this was the end product.

Pollock. This was a painting I made over night on a 30/40" canvas overnight for a show the following day. Tried to keep it as simple and to the point as possible. Did not have the time to go passed the monochrome painting of the figure(should have used acrylic, but preferred not to), so I decided to slightly embellish it with simple, and deliberately faint hues. In the end, i left it as was.

Hey Peoples,

My name's Pablo and I'm a friend of Roman's. I'm a self taught artist because it's cheaper that way or something. Anyways, this is stage 3 on one of the paintings I'm working on. I hadn't done any human figure based paintings up until this year. Until now it's been more conceptual, abstract, and biomorphic(I guess - for some reason or another- as a consequence of some psychological negation of reality or something) . I decided to incorporate a realistic element into a composition and weave it with extemporaneous, gestural and free flowing elements, which I usually incorporate into my more abstract, biomorphic work. So far it's been an alternating bumpy, cool ride.

Now, as I think of the composition, I decided that to make it less stiff it's better to add space between his raised arm's sleeve and the jacket, also this way if I'll have some stuff sticking out from the book bag (umbrella, perhaps) i could create a curve. Thinking of repainting it on the different format, since more space on the left might work better.

I have painted the head over about 7 times already, and in the process it has become bigger. Looks like I will have to restretch this baby, Thanx Polina! hehe just kidding.
